A ten thousandth of a coin, and why nothing hinges on it

This is the only number in the section that is an order of magnitude rather than a value. A normal priority transfer costs a tiny fraction of a coin, and the exact fraction moves with how busy the chain is on the day.

Where the 0.0001 figure comes from

Fees are worked out per transaction from its size in bytes and from a base rate the network adjusts as blocks fill. The wallet then multiplies that by whichever priority you picked. The figure at the top of this page assumes normal priority on an ordinary day for block space, which is the assumption a judged number is obliged to name.

A ten thousandth of a coin is one part in ten thousand. Underneath, the wallet is not working in coins at all. It works in the integer units described on the twelve decimal page, so a fee of this size is around a hundred million of those units out of the million million that make up one coin.

The reason to give an order of magnitude and stop is that anything more precise is false precision. Quote four significant figures and somebody will repeat them as current a year later. What survives time is the size of the thing, and the size is small.

What a fee this small is worth

It takes the fee out of the argument. Whatever went wrong with a payment, this was almost never it. Set against an order of any size, the cost of moving coin is nearer to the cost of the electricity than to anything that would show up on a receipt.

That has a practical effect on behaviour. Splitting a payment in two costs two fees instead of one, and two of these is still nothing. Sending a small test first costs the same nothing, and since a send cannot be undone, a test converts the expensive mistake into the cheap one. When a step is free you should take it, and people skip these steps because they imagine a cost that is not there.

It also means a market never has a fee reason to ask you to consolidate payments or to send one large transfer rather than several. If somebody frames that as saving money, the saving is imaginary and the request is about something else.

The blame that lands on the fee

The standard misdiagnosis is a transfer that looks stuck and a person deciding the fee must have been too low. On chains where block space is auctioned every day that can genuinely happen. Here it almost never is the cause.

The real cause is usually one of two things and neither involves the fee. Either the transfer has not been in enough blocks yet, which is a matter of the clock on the block page, or the coin arrived but is still inside the ten block lock and cannot be spent again. Both look identical to somebody watching a balance that will not do what they want.

The second bit of blame runs the other way. People raise the priority setting to fix a wait, pay several times the fee, and change nothing at all, because the wait was never about competition for space. A higher priority buys earlier inclusion when blocks are full. It does not buy blocks arriving sooner.

What pushes 0.0001 up or down

Three things move the fee itself. Demand for block space, which pushes the base rate around when the chain gets busy. The priority setting in the sending wallet, which multiplies it. And the size of the transaction, which depends on how many separate pieces of coin the wallet has to gather to reach the amount you asked for.

The fourth thing is not about the fee at all. What a ten thousandth of a coin is worth in ordinary currency moves with the coin price, and this site prints no price anywhere. It would be wrong quickly and it would be a claim this site has no business making. Look it up when you need it and treat the answer as good for that day.

How to spend a rounding errorA fee this small is a reason to be generous with steps rather than sparing with them. Test transfers, split payments and second opinions all cost about the same as nothing.

Is 0.0001 the current fee?

It is the order of magnitude for a normal priority transfer under ordinary conditions, which is the assumption named at the top of this page. Your wallet shows the exact figure before you confirm.

Should I raise the priority to make a payment land faster?

Only if blocks are visibly full. It does not make blocks arrive sooner, and the wait most people notice comes from the ten block lock instead.

Why does this site not print what the fee costs in ordinary money?

Because the coin price moves and a printed figure would be wrong almost immediately. Nothing on this site quotes a price.
