Zero, and why all the care has to happen first

People plan for the moment after a payment goes wrong. On this kind of ledger there is no moment after. A transfer that has been recorded is finished, and the count of ways to undo it is zero.

These three addresses are printed as given. This site does not test them, does not know whether any of them answers right now, and publishes no availability figure. An address that opens is not the same thing as an address that is genuine, which is what the forty character fingerprint is for.

Why the number here is zero

A transfer on this kind of ledger is not a message asking somebody to move value. It is the movement. Once a block carries it and further blocks build on top, the record is what every node agrees happened. There is no operator behind the ledger with the ability to edit an entry, because there is no operator at all.

That is where the zero comes from. Not from a market refusing refunds and not from a wallet lacking a button. It falls out of the design. A bank can reverse a payment because a bank is a party to it and keeps its own book. Nobody here keeps a book that can be rewritten by request.

So the count is exact rather than approximate. Not few ways. Not hard ways. Zero, and the same zero for a small payment and a large one.

What a zero changes about care

It moves your whole attention to the front of the process. Every check that would be useful afterwards has to happen before you press send. Address correct, amount correct, wallet correct, coin correct. There is no later in which to notice.

This is why the cheap checks elsewhere on this site earn the seconds they cost. Counting the characters of a payment address takes about as long as reading this sentence, and it is the only chance you get. The ninety five character page covers what that count catches and what it never will.

It also explains a habit that looks odd from outside. People who have used this kind of payment for a while send a small test first, wait for it, then send the rest. The test costs a fee that rounds to nothing, and it turns an irreversible mistake into a cheap one. The fee page puts a size on that cost.

Where the zero gets misread

The first misreading is about escrow. People believe escrow reverses a payment. It does not. Escrow holds funds at an address that takes more than one agreement to spend from, and a dispute decides where those held funds go next. That decision produces a second transfer, forward, to a different destination. The original transfer into escrow is as final as any other. The two of three page covers who has to sign it.

The second is the idea that a market can claw back a deposit that went to the wrong place. It cannot. If coin landed at an address nobody there controls, the market has no more power over it than you do. If it landed at an address the market does control, sending it back is a favour somebody chooses to do rather than a mechanism anybody can invoke.

The third is quieter. People hear irreversible and hear untraceable, or private, or safe. Those are separate properties with separate pages behind them. Finality is only about whether an entry can be undone, and the answer to that is the number at the top of this page.

What could move it off zero

At the protocol level, nothing. There is no upgrade that adds reversal, because adding it would mean adding somebody with the authority to reverse, which is the thing the design removed deliberately.

What can change is the layer above. A custodial service holding coin for you can undo an internal move between two of its own customers, because that move never touched the ledger at all. Worth knowing and worth being careful with, since the same property means the service can move your balance without asking you first.

The other thing that changes is nothing to do with the chain. Somebody can send coin back to you voluntarily. That is a new payment made by a person who agreed to make it, and it is the only kind of return that exists here.

The habit this number should buildTreat every send as final at the moment you click, not at the moment it confirms. Confirmation only tells you the ledger caught up with a decision you had already made.

Questions people ask

Can a wallet cancel a transfer before it confirms?

Some wallets on other chains let you replace an unconfirmed transaction. Monero does not work that way, and once a transfer is broadcast you should treat it as gone.

If escrow does not reverse payments, what does it do?

It puts funds somewhere no single party can spend from alone, so a dispute has something to decide about. The signature page covers the arrangement.

Does a long wait mean my transfer can still be stopped?

No. A pending transfer is waiting to be recorded, not waiting for approval. The ten block page explains the wait people notice most.
